Please include your self-assessment against the Competencies for Entry to the Regsiter of Midwives with your application. A template to use for your self-assessment can be downloaded below. As well as being part of the information required to assess an application, completing a self-assessment is an educative process and will encourage you to reflect on what it means to practise midwifery in New Zealand. The self assessment is available in pdf format and also in Word for those who wish to submit the self-assessment by email.  Only short paragraphs about each criteria are expected. Please contact us at info@midwiferycouncil.org.nz if you have any questions about this aspect of your application.

Midwives qualified overseas must satisfy Council that their pre-registration eeducation together with post-registration experience and any further training equips them with clinical and theoretical skills and knowledge which is at least equivalent to the competencies of a New Zealand graduate at point of entry to the Register. Applicants are not expected to have the competencies which are unique to midwifery in New Zealand.  Please see the relevant section of the Notes accompanying the application form for information about post-registration education requirements and also for what might happen if you do not meet the requirements or if there is insufficient evidence to determine equivalence.

Getting a job

We cannot help you to get a job but if you are looking for one please send us your application for registration as soon as you can. Even if you are offered an employment contract, you cannot work until you are registered and hold a practising certificate. These are two separate processes. Having a job offer has no bearing on your registration application and we regret there is no 'fast track' process for applicants who have a job arranged.

Immigration

We cannot give you advice on immigration requirements however we have summarised the immigration options in the document below. This document also contains useful website links to New Zealand's Department of Immigration. The information was correct as at July 2008.
