Qualifications for Registration
New Zealand midwifery qualifications
Midwives who qualify through a New Zealand midwifery education programme are required to successfully complete a bachelor's degree in midwifery before applying for registration as a midwife. Five approved education providers offer approved bachelor degree programmes in midwifery. For more details visit the education pages on this website.
Midwives who qualified in New Zealand prior to 1994 are not required to obtain a degree in midwifery.
Overseas midwifery qualifications
Overseas registered midwives will have their qualifications and subsequent midwifery practice experiences and education assessed for equivalence against the most recent New Zealand midwifery degree programmes. See the registration requirements for overseas midwives.
