Midwifery Workforce Data

Having robust data about the midwifery workforce is a first step for the Government and the Council in developing workforce strategies.  Each year the New Zealand Health Information Service (part of the Ministry of Health) and the Midwifery Council survey practising and recently practising midwives.  The survey is sent out as part of the annual practising certificate renewal process.  It asks midwives to provide some information about themselves and about their practise as a midwife.  The results of the survey completed in 2006 can be found at the NZHIS internet site here.   Other related data can also be found at the NZHIS site.

The graphs below give the more important results from the 2005 survey.  Survey forms were received from about 2850 midwives.  About 280 returns were from non-practising midwives and are included with these results.  You will need Adobe Reader to view these graphs.  Each document is about 3kb.
