Midwifery Workforce Data
Having robust data about the midwifery workforce is a first step for the Government and the Council in developing workforce strategies. Each year the New Zealand Health Information Service (part of the Ministry of Health) and the Midwifery Council survey practising and recently practising midwives. The survey is sent out as part of the annual practising certificate renewal process. It asks midwives to provide some information about themselves and about their practise as a midwife. The results of the most recent survey can be found at the NZHIS internet site here. Other related data can also be found at the NZHIS site.
In March 2010 Council published its inaugural Midwifery Workforce Report. This report presents data collected by the Midwifery Council in conjunction with renewal of midwives' practising certificates from 2005 to 2009. It is intended that such reports will be published bi-ennially. An electronic copy is available below. If you wish to obtain a soft copy, please contact us.
